Amid escalating tensions over the war in Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of nuclear-armed submarines to key regions, responding to provocative remarks by Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former president and current deputy chairman of the Security Council.
On Friday, Trump posted on Truth Social that he had ordered the repositioning of the submarines following what he called “highly provocative statements” from Medvedev. Trump warned that such rhetoric could have unintended consequences, stressing, “I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”
Medvedev, known for his hawkish and sometimes cryptic messages on X (formerly Twitter), reacted to Trump’s recent ultimatum for Russia to make progress toward peace in Ukraine. Medvedev criticized Trump’s threat to impose sanctions and shorten the deadline for action from 50 to 10 days, saying, “Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not just between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country.”
He added: “Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10. He should remember: Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!”
Trump, frustrated with what he calls Russia’s lack of progress toward a ceasefire, reaffirmed his campaign pledge to secure peace in Ukraine within 24 hours if elected. He recounted telling the First Lady about his talks with Putin, only to hear of continued attacks in Ukraine.
While Putin has not responded directly to Trump’s ultimatum, he reiterated his call for a “lasting and stable peace” that would guarantee the security of both Russia and Ukraine, yet he made no promises of concessions, even as Russian strikes continued across Ukraine.
