A court in St. Petersburg has prohibited the distribution of three books by Viktor Suvorov — Icebreaker, M Day, and Cleansing — ruling that they contain distorted historical facts, including misrepresentations of evidence from the Nuremberg Trials, and allegedly portray the USSR in a negative light.

The court also stated that the texts insult the memory of war veterans and undermine Russia’s spiritual and moral values.

According to the press service of the city’s courts, the materials were found to exert “informational influence aimed at undermining the historical foundations of Russia.”

The ban followed an expert review commissioned by the St. Petersburg prosecutor’s office, the results of which were announced earlier by State Duma deputy Olga Zanko.

Viktor Suvorov (real name Vladimir Rezun) is a former GRU officer who defected to the United Kingdom in 1978.

His works promote the theory that the USSR planned to strike Germany first in 1941, contradicting the official Russian historical narrative.

In 2024, the authorities in Belarus also declared Suvorov’s books “extremist,” citing his claims that Joseph Stalin intended to launch World War II before Adolf Hitler.
