Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday, August 30, according to his security chief, Michael Ragusa.
Ragusa said Giuliani, 81, had stopped earlier that day to help a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident, contacting 911 and waiting until police arrived.
Shortly afterward, while driving on the highway, his vehicle was struck from behind at high speed.
Giuliani was taken to a local trauma center, where doctors diagnosed a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg. His business partner, Maria Ryan, who is also a nurse, arrived at the hospital to assist with his care.
Doctors expect Giuliani to remain hospitalized for two to three days before being fitted with a brace for his back injury.
Ragusa said the former mayor was “in great spirits” despite the accident.
