A mother of three was killed and her teenage daughter critically wounded in a shooting in Polk County, Florida, following a domestic argument during a televised NFL game, authorities said.
According to Sheriff Grady Judd, 47-year-old Jason Kenney shot and killed his wife, Crystal Kenney, and seriously injured her 13-year-old daughter on December 22 before fleeing the scene. He later died by suicide.
The incident occurred after an argument erupted over control of the television.
Crystal reportedly objected to her husband continuing to watch the NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts.
During the confrontation, Crystal instructed her 12-year-old son to run to a neighbor’s house and call the police. As the boy fled, he heard gunshots.
Responding officers found Crystal Kenney dead inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head. Her 13-year-old daughter was discovered in a bedroom with two gunshot wounds — one to the face and another to the shoulder.
The girl was transported to hospital and remains in critical but stable condition.
“She said, ‘I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway,’” Sheriff Judd said, recounting the girl’s words.
Authorities described her survival as “a Christmas miracle.” One bullet entered the bridge of her nose, traveled through the top of her head, and exited without causing fatal injuries.
The couple’s one-year-old daughter was found unharmed and asleep in her crib.
Investigators later located Jason Kenney at his father’s property, where he had locked himself inside a shed. While fleeing, he called his sister and told her he had “done something very, very bad” and said that “the next time you see me will be on the news.”
After officers surrounded the shed and attempted to negotiate his surrender, Kenney fatally shot himself.
A search of the home revealed a note written by Crystal Kenney urging her husband to seek help for substance abuse. The note stated that he had been drinking and using cocaine and that “this is not the way the family should be.”
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said Jason Kenney had no prior criminal record and there were no documented reports of domestic violence involving the family.
The three surviving children have been placed in the care of Crystal Kenney’s parents.
