In a surprising collaboration, HBO has greenlit a limited comedy series created by Larry David and former President Barack Obama. The untitled half-hour show will explore moments from American history and feature familiar faces from Curb Your Enthusiasm as well as notable guest stars.
Written by David and his longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer, who will also direct, the series marks David’s first major project since Curb Your Enthusiasm ended last year. The show is produced by Obama’s Higher Ground, in what is believed to be their first TV project outside of Netflix.
Executive producers include David, Schaffer, Barack and Michelle Obama, Vinnie Malhotra, and Ethan Lewis.
Both David and Obama commented on the unusual partnership with characteristic humor. “Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David,” Obama joked, while David quipped about abandoning a short-lived beekeeping hobby to return to television.
Amy Gravitt, HBO’s EVP of Comedy Programming, said, “We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a fresh look at our shared history as we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.”
The series promises a comedic take on history, focusing on characters “largely ignored by history”—and that, according to Schaffer, is “a good thing.”
