James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios and director of the upcoming "Superman" film, has opened up about the true meaning behind his take on the iconic superhero.
In a recent interview with The Times UK, Gunn emphasized that his vision for Superman stays true to the original idea first introduced in 1938.
"Superman is the story of America," Gunn explained, noting the character’s longstanding reputation as a symbol for the immigrant experience.
"He’s an immigrant who came from another world and found a place here. But at its core, this story is about the value of basic human kindness—something we seem to be losing."
Gunn acknowledged that the film might be viewed differently by various audiences in the US, particularly in the context of today’s divided political climate. However, he insisted that the film's central message is about compassion. "There will always be people who are offended just because the story is about kindness, but that shouldn’t stop us from telling it," he said.
The film, set for release on July 11, stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, an established reporter at the Daily Planet who is in a relationship with Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan.
The plot follows Superman as he faces challenges both at home and abroad, with public opinion shifting rapidly as Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), a tech billionaire, tries to seize power.
Gunn describes the movie as one that goes beyond politics, focusing instead on moral questions—such as the nature of goodness and the limits of forgiveness.
"At the end of the day, it’s a story about a man who chooses to be good in a world that often isn’t," Gunn said. "That feels especially important right now, when people are losing faith in each other’s goodness."
While Gunn admits he doesn’t expect to change the world with his film, he hopes it will inspire viewers to show a little more kindness.
"If just a few people come away from this movie wanting to be nicer to others, I’ll be happy," he added.
