White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed concerns on Thursday after President Donald Trump was seen with apparent bruising and swelling on his hands and ankles earlier this week.
Leavitt reassured reporters that the president, 79, is in good health and explained that the discoloration and swelling are due to a “chronic and harmless vein condition.” According to Leavitt, Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a circulatory issue common in people over 70.
“This is a mild case and is nothing to be alarmed about,” Leavitt stated.
“The President underwent a comprehensive exam, including ultrasounds, after he noticed mild swelling. His physician confirmed that there is no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease.”
Leavitt added that the minor irritation was exacerbated by “frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin,” and she acknowledged that “recent photographs showing the President’s hands reflect the symptoms.”
In the spirit of transparency, Trump reportedly asked the White House to publicly read his physician’s letter. The letter further confirmed that “an echocardiogram revealed normal cardiac function, and no signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness were detected.”
Trump’s health has otherwise received a positive report. In April, White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella described the president as having “excellent cognitive and physical health” and declared him “fully fit to execute the duties of Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”
The president, known for his active lifestyle and love of golf, has lost 20 pounds since his last checkup, and his cholesterol is now at 140, according to his medical records.
Despite his well-known fondness for fast food, Fox News host Sean Hannity revealed, “If [Trump] has a burger now, he usually doesn’t have it with a bun.”
The White House emphasized that Trump’s condition is being managed with lifestyle advice: maintaining a healthy weight, regular walking, and elevating his legs periodically.
