A large Western publishing house, which left Russia with the beginning of war, has returned

Publishing House Penguin House

The book publishing house Penguin Random House became the first known case of the return to Russia of a major international brand that left the Russian market after the start of the SVO.

The publisher’s German and Spanish divisions have begun operating in Russia, said Alexey Ilyin, general director of the Alpina publishing group.

Companies resumed work in Russia after the Frankfurt Book Fair held at the end of October, said “Kommersant” Ilyin.

Random House has many famous authors in its portfolio, including Liu Cixin, Nicholas Sparks, John Grisham, Stephen King, Lucinda Riley.

However, for now, there is probably no talk of resuming their sales in Russia.

Penguin Random House was created after the merger of publishers Penguin and Random House in 2013.

Immediately after the merger, it became the world's largest publishing house, occupying about 26% of the world market. The company is one of the “big five” major world publishing houses, accounting for about 39% of the revenue of all “five” publishing houses.

At the end of March 2022, Penguin Random House suspended work with the Russian market.
